DeVonta Smith returned to limited participation Thursday, giving the Eagles an encouraging development as they prepare to face Carolina without Jalen Hurts. Smith, who is dealing with hamstring and toe injuries, was listed as a nonparticipant Wednesday before improving Thursday. Saquon Barkley remained a nonparticipant with a hamstring injury, joining six other Eagles who did not practice.
Hurts was listed as a nonparticipant with a calf injury after Philadelphia ruled him out against the Panthers because of a superficial blood clot. The Eagles also practiced without Michael Carter II (abdomen), A.J. Epenesa (back), Jalyx Hunt (knee/ankle), Will Shipley (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (hamstring). Wicks and Epenesa went from limited participation
Wednesday to nonparticipants Thursday. Wicks' status adds another concern for a passing game already preparing for a quarterback change, making Smith's progress particularly important.
There were improvements elsewhere. Drew Kendall (knee) returned to limited participation after missing Wednesday's session, while Marcus Epps (groin) advanced from limited to full participation.

Landon Dickerson (knee), Jakorian Bennett (knee), Grant Calcaterra (back) and Eli Stowers (quad) remained limited after Wednesday opened their practice windows. Their participation does not mean they have been activated from injured reserve. Marquise Brown (ankle), Jonathan Greenard (ankle), E.J. Jenkins (toe) and Tyler Steen (shoulder) also remained limited.
Barkley's continued absence leaves Philadelphia waiting on its depleted backfield. Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, and Shipley's foot injury has created another opening for Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele if Barkley cannot return.
Smith's limited participation is a step forward, but his availability for Sunday remains unsettled. Friday's practice and the final injury report will clarify who will be available around Philadelphia's replacement quarterback.
