Jalen Hurts did not spend his offseason publicly fighting every criticism directed at him following the Philadelphia Eagles’disappointing 2025 season. He accepted responsibility because he believes the quarterback position requires it.
During his interview with GQ, Hurts addressed reports questioning his willingness to change and portraying his demanding personality as one factor in Philadelphia’s offensive problems. Hurts did not confirm every characterization. He also did not build his response around challenging the anonymous criticism. Hurts stood strong on his position that the quarterback will be judged by whether the team wins, making ownership part of his job. Philadelphia returned much of its Super Bowl roster last season but never established
a consistent offensive identity. The unit finished 19th in scoring before the Eagles were eliminated by San Francisco in the wild-card round.
Those failures produced significant changes. Kevin Patullo was dismissed, Sean Mannion was promoted to offensive coordinator, and the roster surrounding Hurts was reshaped. Hurts will work with his seventh play-caller while attempting to help Mannion establish an offense built around timing, precision and rhythm. The changes will require flexibility from the quarterback and the players around him.
Criticism of Hurts often exists beside his accomplishments. He has led Philadelphia to two Super Bowls, won a championship and established himself as one of the NFL’s most successful quarterbacks. None of that exempts him from responsibility when the offense falls short. Hurts understands that reality and has chosen accountability over a public defense.
The only meaningful response will come when Philadelphia’s offense takes the field.
