The Philadelphia Eagles adjusted their linebacker depth on Thursday, signing Anfernee Orji and placing Chance Campbell on the Practice Squad Injured List. Philadelphia did not disclose the nature or severity of Campbell’s injury when it announced the transaction. The move temporarily removes a linebacker who had recently received an opportunity on game day. Campbell was elevated from the practice squad for Monday night’s loss to the Chicago Bears before returning to the developmental unit.
Orji gives the Eagles another athletic linebacker who could eventually contribute on special teams. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound defender entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints following the 2023 NFL draft.
A four-year contributor
at Vanderbilt, Orji led the Commodores in tackles during three consecutive seasons. His most productive college campaign came in 2021, when he recorded 93 tackles and 13 tackles for loss. He also displayed notable athleticism during the pre-draft process, running the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Orji spent his rookie season on New Orleans’ practice squad before earning a place on the Saints’ 53-man roster in 2024. He appeared in 16 games, including two starts, while working primarily on special teams. His preseason performance helped secure that role after he led the Saints with 20 tackles and added three special-teams stops.
The addition should be viewed primarily as a depth and developmental move. Orji will have time to learn Philadelphia’s defensive system while giving special-teams coordinator Michael Clay another experienced option if the Eagles need help on their coverage units.
The Eagles are replacing Campbell with a similarly athletic player who already has NFL game-day experience.
