The Philadelphia Eagles have asked a lot of Jalen Carter through the season's first month. That's hardly surprising. When healthy, he's one of the most disruptive defensive tackles in football and can change games with a single snap.
The biggest issue may also be the most obvious. The two-time Pro Bowler and 2024 Second-Team All-Pro hasn't been fully healthy, and according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the effects of his injury may be starting to show more as they take a larger toll on his performance.
Philadelphia's defense delivered another uneven performance in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. While much of the postgame discussion centered on the Eagles' inability to close out a fourth-quarter lead, Fangio offered an interesting
observation when discussing Carter's recent play.
Vic Fangio believes playing with a cast is taking a greater toll on Jalen Carter than it did earlier this season.
Carter has been playing through a wrist injury that requires a cast. Until now, there hadn't been much public discussion about how much it was affecting him. That changed on Tuesday. When asked by the Philadelphia media to assess how Carter is handling the injury, Fangio acknowledged the wrist seemed to affect him more against the Rams than in previous games. He explained the obvious challenge of playing one of football's most physically demanding positions while essentially operating with one compromised hand.
"I think it affected him more this past game than it had been, which is to be expected in a way... It's hard enough to play this game with two hands. When you have a cast on one, it's going to have a negative effect at some point."
Those comments stand out because Fangio has generally avoided offering injury-related excuses throughout the season. His assessment suggests the Eagles are beginning to see the cumulative effects of asking Carter to battle through the issue every week. The discussion didn't stop there. Later in the session, Fangio was asked whether Carter might be playing too many snaps given the circumstances. His response, "Possibly," was brief but also very noteworthy.
That answer could become increasingly important as Philadelphia prepares for a Week 5 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Eagles have already leaned more heavily on Byron Young and Ty Robinson at times, and managing Carter's workload may become a larger part of the conversation moving forward.
None of this changes Carter's importance to the defense. If anything, Fangio's comments reinforce just how valuable he remains. Even while battling a wrist injury, Carter continues drawing extra attention from opposing offenses and remains one of the focal points of Philadelphia's defensive game plan.
Still, Fangio's remarks offered one of the clearest indications yet that Carter's injury isn't simply background noise. The Eagles may not have reached the point where they need to alter his role dramatically, but the defensive coordinator's comments suggest the wrist is becoming harder to ignore as the season moves forward.
The timing couldn't be worse. Philadelphia is already searching for answers following consecutive losses, and Fangio recently acknowledged that the pass rush has been too inconsistent in one-on-one situations. Carter remains the centerpiece of that effort, and if the wrist is affecting him more than it did earlier in the season, it adds another layer of concern to a defense already being tested by injuries and depth challenges.
With a trip to London looming, all eyes will be on the Eagles' star defensive tackle to see whether a week of recovery can help him regain the disruptive form that has made him one of the NFL's most dangerous interior defenders.
