The Philadelphia Eagles did not get the amount of summer work they preferred from the entire wide receiver group, but Howie Roseman believes the final six offer complementary skills and considerable upside. ESPN's Tim McManus asked Roseman about the overall state of the position after Philadelphia kept DeVonta Smith, Hollywood Brown, Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper and Elijah Moore.
“Obviously, you would’ve liked them to be together a little bit more here through the summer, but have a lot of confidence in that group,” Roseman said. “I think it’s a talented group from top to bottom.”
Injuries prevented Brown, Smith and Lemon from consistently working together during training camp. Lemon, the No. 20 overall pick, was limited by a hamstring
injury before making his preseason debut against Cincinnati.
The Eagles nevertheless have defined roles available throughout the group.
“It starts with Smitty, who I don’t think it’s a secret how high we are on him,” Roseman said. “Tay’s exactly what we thought he would be.”
Wicks gives Philadelphia a bigger receiver who can work outside, while Brown provides vertical speed. Lemon projects as a versatile target capable of lining up at multiple positions. Cooper earned his place after making substantial progress from his rookie season. Moore secured the final spot through consistent route-running, separation, and reliable hands.
“All those guys, they play different roles,” Roseman said.
The group’s success will depend on health and how quickly the receivers adapt to Mannion’s offense. Philadelphia did not have enough full-speed summer repetitions to answer every question. Roseman still believes the Eagles have enough talent, versatility and depth to give Hurts options at every level of the field.
