The Philadelphia Eagles will have to wait a little longer before getting their first extended look at Jonathan Greenard in Vic Fangio’s defense. Fangio said Tuesday that Greenard, who is dealing with a triceps injury, won’t be ready for at least another couple of weeks. The timeline will likely keep the veteran outside linebacker out for most, if not all, of Philadelphia’s preseason schedule.
The Eagles open the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. They will hold a joint practice with the New England Patriots on Aug. 19. Greenard’s continued absence means he could miss both valuable opportunities to work against unfamiliar offenses.

Philadelphia still has more than a month before its regular-season opener. There is no reason to rush Greenard back before his arm has fully healed, but every missed practice makes his eventual transition into Fangio’s system more difficult.
Jonathan Greenard is learning a different role.
Greenard arrived in Philadelphia after the Eagles acquired him from Minnesota during the offseason. The veteran has already demonstrated that he can produce as a pass rusher, recording 12 sacks in 2023 and 12.5 in 2024.
Fangio plans to ask Greenard to do more than rush the quarterback. The Eagles want him to handle different alignments and occasionally drop into coverage, creating responsibilities he hasn't been asked to perform consistently throughout his career. Greenard can study those assignments during meetings, but classroom work can't fully replace repeated practice. He must eventually learn how his responsibilities fit alongside Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Zack Baun and the other defenders around him.
The Eagles acquired Greenard to become a major piece of the pass rush. His health remains more important than forcing him onto the practice field before he is ready.
Eagles’ other edge rushers gain valuable opportunities
Greenard’s absence continues creating additional work for Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa.
Hunt led Philadelphia with 6.5 sacks and 57 quarterback pressures last season. He has already established himself as one of Fangio’s most important young defenders and should remain near the top of the rotation. Smith returned from his own triceps injury last season and recorded three sacks after rejoining the lineup. Philadelphia needs him healthy and prepared for a larger role while Greenard remains unavailable.
Ebiketie has taken advantage of increased practice snaps and continues making his case for meaningful work. The former Atlanta Falcons edge rusher has registered 16.5 sacks and 126 pressures through his first four NFL seasons.
Epenesa is also learning new responsibilities after spending six seasons in Buffalo. His size and experience give Fangio another option who can contribute against the run and as a pass rusher. Newly signed Tarron Jackson and the other reserve outside linebackers will benefit from additional preseason snaps, but Greenard’s role isn't in question. The issue is how quickly he can become comfortable once cleared. The latest timeline doesn't guarantee that Greenard will miss the regular-season opener. It does confirm that Philadelphia must continue preparing without him.
The Eagles need Greenard in September and beyond, not for an exhibition game in August. For now, patience remains the smartest plan.
