The Eagles selected Cooper DeJean with the 40th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but Howie Roseman never expected the former Iowa defensive back to remain available that long.
Philadelphia was prepared to draft DeJean at No. 21.
Roseman revealed the organization’s first-round evaluation during an appearance with Daniel Jeremiah on the relaunched “Move the Sticks” podcast. The Eagles ultimately used the 22nd pick on Quinyon Mitchell before trading up in the second round for DeJean.
The result gave Philadelphia two foundational defensive backs from the same draft class.
DeJean’s value begins with his versatility. He can cover slot receivers, match up with tight ends, defend the run and create pressure as a blitzer. Those traits allow Vic Fangio
to keep him on the field against different personnel groupings without exposing the defense. Roseman said the Eagles have focused on acquiring versatile defenders because modern offenses constantly change formations and create matchups. A player who can handle several assignments prevents the offense from dictating substitutions.
DeJean also possesses unusual athletic ability. Roseman recalled being told before the draft that DeJean could have played quarterback at Iowa. The general manager believes he could contribute on offense if the Eagles allowed it.
That will not be necessary. DeJean has already established himself as one of the NFL’s most impactful young defensive backs and an important part of Philadelphia’s return game. The Eagles believed he was a first-round talent. Landing him after selecting Mitchell made the outcome even more valuable.
