The Philadelphia Eagles' 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders produced another disappointing result, but the final score doesn't tell the entire story. Some of the more revealing details came from the statistical oddities, individual performances, and historical developments that got lost in another prime-time defeat.
Philadelphia's six-game losing streak has exposed plenty of problems, but Week 8 also offered a few numbers and details worth a closer look. Here are five deeper observations from the Eagles' latest loss.
Markel Bell is struggling in an unfamiliar position
Markel Bell wasn't expected to be Philadelphia's starting right tackle this season, and the position was unfamiliar to him before the summer. Circumstances have forced him into a significant role, but the results have been hard
to ignore.
According to Pro Football Focus, Bell has allowed 17 pressures, including nine quarterback hurries, five sacks, and three quarterback hits. Those numbers illustrate how challenging the transition has been. Philadelphia needs better protection from the right side, and Bell's development has become an increasingly important part of that equation.
The Eagles' six-game losing streak approaches historic territory
Philadelphia hasn't endured a losing streak this long since 2012. That season ended with a 4-12 record and the dismissal of Andy Reid, marking the end of an era for the franchise.
The current Eagles have a long way to go to reach that kind of organizational turning point, but the historical comparison is hard to ignore. Six consecutive defeats have put Philadelphia in territory it hasn't occupied in 14 years, and the team has yet to show convincing evidence that the slide is over.
Washington accomplished several rare things against Philadelphia
The Commanders had plenty to celebrate beyond ending their own losing ways.According to Washington's official website, Sunday's victory marked the franchise's first home Sunday Night Football win over Philadelphia since 2005. It was also Washington's first Sunday Night Football victory against the Eagles since 2020.
The defensive performance carried its own historical significance. Washington recorded five sacks, its most against Philadelphia since Week 1 of 2020, while holding the Eagles to 268 net yards. That was Philadelphia's lowest offensive yardage total against Washington since Week 10 of 2022.
For a team that entered the matchup with only one victory, Washington produced a performance that deserves more attention than the final score alone.
Tanner McKee finished third in rushing, 10 yards shy of being the team leader
Tanner McKee wasn't expected to provide much of a running threat, and in truth, beyond a surprise 15-yard dash he wasn't, but he nearly became Philadelphia's leading rusher anyway. He finished with 25 yards on four attempts, trailing Saquon Barkley's 30 yards and Elijah Mitchell's team-high 34.
McKee's long scramble was one of the evening's more surprising plays. The quarterback actually finished ahead of Barkley in rushing yards per attempt, averaging 6.3 compared with Barkley's 2.3.
That's an unusual distinction for an offense featuring one of the league's most accomplished running backs. Even with Barkley managing injuries, Philadelphia needed considerably more from its traditional ground game.
More possession, more plays, more first downs, and fewer penalties still weren't enough
Philadelphia actually won several statistical battles against Washington. The Eagles possessed the ball for 33:31 compared with Washington's 26:29. They ran 68 offensive plays to the Commanders' 57 and finished with 17 first downs to Washington's 16. They also committed fewer penalties, five to Washington's seven.
Yet the Eagles lost by 17 points.
The difference was efficiency. Philadelphia averaged just 3.9 yards per play, while Washington averaged 5.9. The Eagles had more opportunities to move the football, but they couldn't turn that advantage into meaningful production. Washington needed fewer plays and less possession time to generate considerably more offense.
The most troubling part of these numbers is that Philadelphia isn't losing because of one isolated weakness. The Eagles can win the possession battle, limit their penalties, and still find themselves overwhelmed because the production isn't there when it matters. Six straight losses have made that painfully clear. The numbers may tell different stories, but they keep pointing to the same uncomfortable conclusion: this team has a lot more to fix than one bad Sunday night.
