Training camp is finally upon us, and if nothing changes between now and the start of the regular season, the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback room appears fairly straightforward. Jalen Hurts remains the unquestioned starter. Veteran Andy Dalton provides one of the NFL's most experienced backup options, and Tanner McKee has spent the past several seasons developing into a reliable backup option.
McKee has occasionally drawn interest from quarterback-needy teams around the league. The uncertainty begins with seventh-round rookie Cole Payton. The rookie isn't expected to challenge anyone above him on the depth chart. Still, training camp and the preseason will determine whether the Eagles believe he's simply a developmental prospect or someone
worth protecting on the initial 53-man roster.
That possibility may sound far-fetched, but it isn't a new conversation. Following April's draft, there was legitimate discussion about whether Philadelphia could carry four quarterbacks into the regular season. Those conversations have quieted over the past few months, largely because there hasn't been much football to evaluate. With camp underway, however, it may be time to revisit the idea.
The Eagles have rarely abandoned their draft picks quickly
The Eagles have built one of the NFL's deepest rosters by investing in player development and resisting the urge to give up on young talent too soon. A seventh-round selection carries no guarantee of making the roster, especially on a team with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, but draft status alone won't determine Payton's future.
If the coaching staff believes he has NFL-caliber tools, exposing him to waivers becomes a calculated risk. That becomes even more intriguing when considering Payton's skill set.
Unlike a traditional pocket passer, he brings dual-threat ability that could eventually create opportunities beyond serving as an emergency quarterback. Then again, is it unfair to expect him to become the next Taysom Hill, the former New Orleans Saints weapon who demonstrated how an athletic quarterback can contribute in specialized packages while continuing to develop as a passer?
Whether Philadelphia ever explores that type of role remains to be seen, but Payton's versatility gives the organization more to evaluate than arm strength alone. Payton also arrives with a winning pedigree. He helped lead two FCS national championship teams, earned first-team FCS All-American honors in 2023 and was named first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference the same season. Those accomplishments don't guarantee NFL success, but they reinforce why the Eagles invested a draft pick in him.
The resume suggests Cole Payton is worth a longer look
Ultimately, this conversation may have less to do with Payton than with how the Eagles value quarterbacks. McKee's name could continue surfacing in trade discussions, and Philadelphia understands as well as any organization that capable quarterbacks are valuable assets.
No one should expect the Eagles to carry four quarterbacks simply because they drafted Payton. Still, if the rookie proves he belongs during training camp and the preseason, the possibility shouldn't be dismissed. For a front office that has never been afraid to think differently, an unconventional quarterback room may still be very much in play. Whether that ultimately means a four-person quarterback room remains to be seen, but if Cole Payton forces the Eagles into a difficult decision this summer, that may be the strongest indication yet that Philadelphia found another quarterback worth keeping.
