Caleb Williams avoided a major injury
, but the Chicago Bears could be without their starting quarterback when the Philadelphia Eagles visit Soldier Field on Monday night. Bears coach Ben Johnson told ESPN 1000 that Williams is considered week-to-week after suffering a hamstring pull during Chicago’s 9-3 loss to Minnesota. Johnson said Williams will “likely miss some time,” making Tyson Bagent the probable starter if Williams cannot play.Williams underwent an MRI on Monday. The Bears have not officially ruled him out against Philadelphia, but the short-term designation places his availability in serious doubt. Tom Pelissero, who covers the NFL for The Ringer and Netflix Sports, reported that testing confirmed Williams avoided a major injury
and that Chicago was not immediately eliminating the possibility of him playing.
Caleb Williams has dealt with a hamstring injury before and the rehab process is just getting started. But based on how it looked and sounded, it appears this is about the best-case scenario. https://t.co/Bho69KXphb

Williams was injured on a noncontact scramble during the fourth quarter Sunday. He completed 15 of 26 passes for 138 yards and one interception while adding 42 rushing yards before leaving. Bagent completed 5 of 9 passes for 54 yards in relief. The injury changes the complexion of a matchup between the 2-0 Eagles and 1-1 Bears. Williams accounted for four touchdowns while Chicago scored 59 points in its opener, demonstrating the explosive ceiling he brings to Johnson’s offense.
Bagent has starting experience, but replacing Williams would remove Chicago’s most dangerous improvisational threat. It would also give Vic Fangio additional flexibility to pressure the pocket and challenge the Bears to generate explosive plays without their starting quarterback.
Williams’ status will remain worth monitoring throughout the week, but Philadelphia must begin its preparation expecting Bagent to start.
