The Eagles placed running back Will Shipley on injured reserve Friday, opening a spot on their 53-man roster for quarterback Joe Milton III. Shipley suffered a partial tear of his plantar fascia during Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville in London, according to reports earlier this week. He will miss at least the next four games, worsening Philadelphia’s backfield problems, which already include injuries to Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby.
The move creates room for Milton, whom the Eagles are signing from the Cowboys’ practice squad. Philadelphia needed another quarterback after Jalen Hurts was ruled out against Carolina because of a superficial blood clot. Tanner McKee is preparing to start Sunday, with Cole Payton also available. Milton gives the Eagles another option
while Hurts’ return timetable remains uncertain.

Shipley’s absence leaves Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele as important options while Barkley works through a hamstring injury. Bigsby is already on injured reserve, leaving Philadelphia without two members of its original running back rotation regardless of Barkley’s availability.
Shipley started against Jacksonville with Barkley and Bigsby unavailable, scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run before leaving with the foot injury. He was listed as a nonparticipant Wednesday and Thursday.
His minimum absence covers the Carolina game and the three NFC East matchups that follow against Dallas, Washington and the Giants before Philadelphia’s Week 10 bye. Completing that required absence would make him eligible to return, but it wouldn't guarantee he's healthy enough to play.
For an Eagles team trying to end a three-game losing streak, Friday’s transaction addresses quarterback depth while confirming another extended absence at running back.
