The Philadelphia Eagles are not planning to trade Saquon Barkley before the NFL's Nov. 10 trade deadline, ending speculation that the star running back could be among the veterans moved as the franchise evaluates its future.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Philadelphia has decided to retain Barkley despite a disappointing 2-5 start and a five-game losing streak that has raised questions about general manager Howie Roseman's plans.
The report comes as the Eagles prepare for Sunday night's NFC East matchup against the Washington Commanders, with Barkley expected to return after dealing with hamstring and back injuries.
Eagles keeping Barkley despite potential roster changes
Philadelphia has been mentioned as a potential seller ahead of the trade deadline, particularly with quarterback
Jalen Hurts sidelined for the remainder of the season and several important contributors dealing with injuries.
However, the organization reportedly believes it has enough talent to compete in 2027 and beyond, making Barkley part of its longer-term plans rather than a player it intends to move for draft compensation. ESPN La Crosse 105.5+1
Barkley, 29, remains under contract through the 2028 season after signing a two-year, $41.2 million extension earlier this year. Moving him would have required Philadelphia to evaluate the potential return against the financial implications of his contract and the value he provides to an offense already undergoing significant changes.
The decision also allows Roseman to maintain one of Philadelphia's established offensive leaders while considering trades involving other veterans.
The Eagles reportedly have received inquiries about defensive tackle Moro Ojomo, although they have indicated he is unavailable. Other players on expiring contracts could still attract interest before the deadline.
Saquon Barkley's return comes at critical time for Eagles
Barkley has been limited by injuries throughout the season, missing two games with a hamstring issue before returning against Dallas on Oct. 26. He subsequently suffered a back injury during Philadelphia's 38-21 loss.
The running back returned to practice Friday after missing the previous two sessions and did not receive a final injury designation, putting him on track to face Washington.
Philadelphia has already placed Dameon Pierce on injured reserve, leaving Jaydon Blue and practice squad elevation Elijah Mitchell as its other available running backs.
Barkley's presence could prove particularly important Sunday against a Washington defensive front missing Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw.
The Eagles rank near the bottom of the NFL in scoring and total offense, making the veteran's ability to establish the running game and create favorable passing situations an important part of the team's plan with Tanner McKee starting at quarterback.
Keeping Barkley does not necessarily mean Philadelphia will avoid making other moves before the deadline. Roseman still has decisions to make about players on expiring contracts and the organization's long-term roster construction.
For now, the Eagles have reportedly made their position clear on one of the franchise's biggest stars.
Barkley is expected to remain in Philadelphia beyond the trade deadline, allowing the team to evaluate its future without moving one of its most important offensive contributors.
