Lane Johnson will be remembered for championships,
Pro Bowls, and years spent neutralizing some of the NFL’s most dangerous pass rushers. His influence, however, cannot be measured solely through football. Johnson became one of the league’s most prominent advocates for mental-health awareness after speaking publicly about his experiences with anxiety and depression. That honesty carried particular weight in an environment where vulnerability has too often been mistaken for weakness. His retirement statement continued that work.

Johnson said he wanted to play one final season but recognized that his priorities had changed. He explained that focusing on his mental health and spending time with his children
and family had become more important than continuing his career.
That decision deserves the same respect as his determination to play through pain.
Professional athletes are frequently celebrated for ignoring physical and emotional warning signs. Johnson offered a different example. He acknowledged that he could not give football the complete mental and emotional commitment he believed his teammates deserved, and he acted accordingly. His willingness to speak publicly can help others understand that success does not make someone immune to anxiety, depression, or personal difficulty. Johnson was an NFL champion and an elite player while navigating those challenges.
The Eagles recognized his broader community impact by naming him their 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee. His charitable work also included the “Philly Special Christmas” projects, which helped raise millions of dollars for area organizations.
Johnson’s blocking ability made him one of the finest players in franchise history. His honesty made him more than that: an influential voice willing to tell people that asking for help is an act of strength.
