On Tuesday, Lane Johnson retired with two Super Bowl championships, three NFC titles, six Pro Bowl selections, and five Associated Press All-Pro honors. A junior college quarterback, he earned first-team All-Pro honors twice and remained among the league’s best right tackles well into his 30s. Those honors provide the foundation of Johnson’s Pro Football Hall of Fame case. The film strengthens it.
At his peak, Johnson combined rare athleticism (he can dunk a basketball) with the strength and technical control required to neutralize elite pass rushers. Philadelphia trusted him in isolated protection situations, allowing the offense to allocate help elsewhere. His ability to handle those assignments shaped what the Eagles could call.
Johnson had
a memorable season, and we're ranking his five best.
5. 2021
Johnson returned from an extended personal absence, missed multiple weeks, and earned AP All-Pro recognition. His performance began a run of four consecutive All-Pro seasons.
4. 2019
Johnson earned his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection and produced an 88.8 PFF grade, which ranked fourth among NFL tackles.
3. 2017
Johnson earned his first Pro Bowl selection and was named a first-team AP All-Pro. He then helped Philadelphia defeat New England in Super Bowl LII.
2. 2022
This may have been Johnson’s purest and finest season as a pass protector and helped ignite his reputation as the best in the sport. He allowed no sacks or quarterback hits across 651 pass-blocking snaps and earned a career-best 90.1 PFF pass-blocking grade.
Johnson played through a torn adductor during the postseason and helped Philadelphia reach Super Bowl LVII. His 0.48 PFF wins above replacement ranked second among 141 tackles.
1. 2024
Johnson was 34 but performed as if he were still at his physical peak.
He earned an 88.9 overall PFF grade, the best season grade of his career, and surrendered only 14 pressures and one sack across 574 pass-blocking snaps. The Eagles’ official media guide credited him with no sacks and only one quarterback hit during 451 regular-season pass-blocking opportunities.
Final Hall of Fame analysis
Johnson earned his sixth Pro Bowl selection and fifth AP All-Pro honor. More importantly, he helped Saquon Barkley rush for 2,005 yards and Philadelphia defeat Kansas City in Super Bowl LIX. His 2022 season may have been more technically pristine, but the dominance, rushing production, and second championship make 2024 the best season of Johnson’s career.
