Zach Ertz's return has generated plenty of excitement around the Philadelphia Eagles. One of the most recognizable players in franchise history is back in Eagles green. Still, before fans wonder how big a role he might play, the organization must first determine where he is physically and mentally after spending time away from football.
That evaluation process continued throughout the week.
Speaking with reporters on Saturday, head coach Nick Sirianni was asked how he felt about Ertz following the veteran tight end's first full week of practice with Philadelphia. While Sirianni stopped short of offering any hints about Ertz's role moving forward, he sounded encouraged by what he saw.
"I think the guys in general had a good week of practice. We've
got one more day here. That's going to be an important part of our process. Guys look good. Zach had a good week. Tight ends in general had a good week. We'll see where we are at the end of the day."
The response wasn't lengthy, but it reinforced a theme that surfaced later in Sirianni's media session when he was asked about the challenges of getting players acclimated after missing training camp and extended football activity.
The Eagles are evaluating more than just physical readiness
Sirianni explained that determining whether a player is ready involves much more than simply watching practice reps. The Eagles are evaluating how players move, how they recover after practice, and how quickly they absorb the details of the system.
In Ertz's case, that process matters more because he is stepping into an environment where many of his teammates have already spent months building habits and routines together.
"You're just looking at their movements, seeing how they're moving, how they're feeling after practice and whether they're learning everything and learning the system. There's habits that the guys that have been here have practiced over and over and over and over again, and you're doing your best job to catch them up on those habits as fast as you can."
Sirianni added that there is no universal formula for determining when a player is fully ready.
"Every situation's a little bit different, and everybody's situation's a little bit different. I wouldn't say there's a checklist to say, 'Hey, this is what we're looking for,' but just asking those questions to ourselves after every practice: 'How did he look? How does he feel?'"
For now, the most notable takeaway is that Sirianni repeatedly described Ertz's week in positive terms. The Eagles are clearly still working through the evaluation process, but the veteran tight end appears to have cleared the first hurdle.
After spending his first week back inside the building, Ertz has given the coaching staff enough reason to feel encouraged as they continue determining how and when he can help Philadelphia moving forward.

The bigger question isn't whether Ertz can still play football. It's whether he can quickly reacclimate to a team that has already spent months building chemistry, developing habits, and refining the details Sirianni referenced. Based on the coach's assessment, that process appears to be moving in the right direction. Whether that translates into a role against the Chicago Bears remains to be seen, but after one week back in Philadelphia, Ertz has already begun checking the boxes the Eagles are looking for.
