The beauty of the NFL schedule for every football aficionado is that every week presents a different challenge. The Philadelphia Eagles survivedan uneven opener against the Washington Commanders before taking care of business against the Tennessee Titans. Now comes a prime-time test against a Chicago Bears team that can create problems on both sides of the ball.
Chicago has enough talent to make this uncomfortable if the Eagles allow it. The Bears can run the football, create explosive plays, and force opponents into mistakes. Philadelphia enters the matchup as the more complete team, but that only matters if the Eagles handle their business. Here are six keys to a victory on Monday Night Football.
Keys to an Eagles win: When Philadelphia is on offense
Be more effective on first down
This is where everything starts. The Eagles are
the only team in the NFL that hasn't generated a first down on a first-down play this season. That has created too many second-and-long and third-and-long situations, forcing Jalen Hurts and the offense to work harder than they need to.
Winning on first down opens up the entire playbook. It keeps the offense on schedule, creates manageable third downs, and lets Sean Mannion stay balanced as a play-caller. Philadelphia doesn't need explosive gains on every first-down snap. Consistent positive yardage will be enough.
Win in the red zone
The difference between three points and seven points could decide this game. Philadelphia has the talent to finish drives with touchdowns, whether through Hurts' arm, Saquon Barkley's legs, or the Eagles' weapons in the passing game.
Settling for field goals against a capable Bears team can keep an opponent in the game longer than necessary. If the Eagles consistently turn red-zone opportunities into touchdowns, they should put themselves in position to control the game.
Re-establish the run
If ever there was an opportunity to re-establish the run, it would be Sunday. Chicago enters the matchup allowing 4.9 yards per carry. That creates an opportunity for Barkley and the offensive line to regain some momentum.
The Eagles also found value in spreading the workload among multiple backs. Whether by design or necessity, sharing carries helped keep runners fresh and gave the offense different looks. If Philadelphia can establish the ground game early, it will create favorable situations for Hurts and help keep Chicago's defense on the field.
Keys to an Eagles win: When Philadelphia is on defense
Make the Bears offense one-dimensional
Everything becomes easier when an opponent is forced to abandon balance. Vic Fangio's defense must do a better job of tackling and maintaining gap discipline against a Bears rushing attack led by D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai.
Chicago is averaging 6.1 yards per carry, and letting that continue would open up the rest of the offense. If the Eagles can slow the running game, they'll force Chicago into more obvious passing situations.
Don't allow Chicago's quarterback to get comfortable.
Whether it's designed throws, quick-game concepts, or deep shots downfield, quarterbacks tend to look much better when they can operate without pressure. Taking away the run puts additional pressure on Chicago's passing attack. If the Bears become predictable, the Eagles can dictate terms defensively and force the quarterback to win the game through the air.
Turn pressures into sacks
The Eagles have been close. Now they need to finish. Philadelphia has generated pressure through the first two weeks but hasn't consistently turned those opportunities into drive-changing sacks. Pressure is valuable, but sacks create negative plays, long-yardage situations, and potential turnover opportunities.
Against a Bears offense that can be dangerous when it stays on schedule, getting home when opportunities present themselves could be the difference between extending drives and ending them. If the Eagles finish the plays they've already been creating, they'll improve their chances of leaving Monday night with another victory.
