The Philadelphia Eagles have reached another turning point in a season that has rapidly unraveled, naming Joe Milton their starting quarterback for Sunday's matchup against the New York Giants. According to Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo, Philadelphia is benching Tanner McKee after three consecutive losses, with the former Stanford quarterback directing the offense.
The decision comes just two days after head coach Nick Sirianni publicly committed to McKee, making the change one of the biggest developments in Philadelphia's disappointing 2-6 start.
With six consecutive losses and an offense averaging 17.1 points per game, the Eagles are running out of time to salvage their season.
Here are five takeaways from the quarterback change.
1. Nick Sirianni's sudden reversal raises questions
Sirianni was
emphatic Monday when asked whether the Eagles would consider replacing McKee.
"Tanner's our guy. We're not making any changes there," the head coach said.
That declaration lasted less than 48 hours before Philadelphia moved forward with Milton. The reversal illustrates the urgency surrounding an organization that entered the season with playoff expectations but now sits at the bottom of the NFC East.
It also raises questions about how the decision was reached and whether the coaching staff had already been considering a change when Sirianni publicly expressed confidence in McKee.
Regardless of the circumstances, the Eagles have placed additional scrutiny on their head coach's decision-making.
2. Joe Milton gives Philadelphia a different offensive dimension
Milton's greatest strengths are his exceptional arm talent and athleticism, two attributes that could allow Philadelphia to expand its offensive approach. At 6-foot-5 and 246 pounds, the former Tennessee standout has the physical tools to attack defenses downfield and create additional opportunities when plays break down.
Milton started one regular-season game for New England in 2024, helping the Patriots defeat Buffalo in their season finale. However, his limited NFL experience also brings concerns about consistency, accuracy, and decision-making.
Philadelphia will need to balance those risks against the potential benefits of adding a more dynamic quarterback to its struggling offense.
3. Tanner McKee's struggles weren't Philadelphia's only problem
McKee finished his three-game stint as the starter with 638 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, but the Eagles went 0-3 and scored just 45 points. The offense also battled injuries along the offensive line and at several skill positions, making it difficult to establish continuity.
Against Washington, McKee completed 23 of 34 passes for 212 yards, but Philadelphia failed to score after the first quarter.
The Eagles allowed five sacks, committed two turnovers, and struggled to sustain drives.
McKee contributed to those problems, but replacing him won't automatically fix the protection issues, inconsistent running game, or offensive execution.
Milton will inherit many of the same challenges.
4. Sean Mannion must adjust the offense to Milton's strengths
Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion now faces another significant challenge in his first season calling plays. Milton joined Philadelphia on Oct. 16, giving him a relatively short period to learn the system before being elevated to the starting lineup.
The Eagles must find ways to capitalize on his arm strength and mobility without asking him to operate an overly complicated game plan.
Designed quarterback movement, play-action passes, and downfield opportunities could give the offense more options after struggling to create explosive plays.
However, the Eagles also need better execution on early downs, improved protection and more consistent production from their running backs and receivers.
The quarterback change must be matched with adjustments across the offense.
5. Milton's audition could shape Philadelphia's plans beyond Week 9
The timing of the decision is significant, with Philadelphia facing the Giants before entering its Week 10 bye.
Sunday's game will let the Eagles evaluate Milton against an NFC East opponent before having more practice time to assess the quarterback position.
With Jalen Hurts sidelined for the remainder of the season, Philadelphia needs to determine whether Milton can provide a reliable alternative or whether the organization must continue exploring its options.
The Eagles also have rookie Cole Payton on the roster, adding another developmental quarterback to the discussion.
Milton's first start will not provide every answer, but his performance could influence Philadelphia's offensive direction for the remainder of the season.
For Sirianni, the stakes extend beyond one position. The Eagles are searching for answers amid their longest losing streak in more than a decade, and another disappointing offensive showing would only intensify questions about the team's overall direction.
