The Philadelphia Eagles are moving on from one of their most productive players of the preseason.
Philadelphia has released running back Carson Steele, according to Ryan Fowler. Because Steele has fewer than four accrued NFL seasons, he will be subject to waivers before becoming a free agent.
Steele made the decision difficult by producing 193 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns during Philadelphia’s three preseason games. He carried the football 20 times for 57 yards and caught 14 passes for 136 yards, consistently showing value as a receiver and physical runner.
His best performance came against New England, when he generated 117 yards from scrimmage and scored on a highlight-reel reception. Steele followed that performance by catching eight
passes for 52 yards and a touchdown during Philadelphia’s preseason finale against Cincinnati.
Steele entered camp facing a difficult path behind Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley. Keeping him would have required Philadelphia to carry a fourth running back or use him in a hybrid fullback role.
The Eagles instead elected to preserve that roster spot for another position. Steele’s productive preseason could make it difficult for Philadelphia to bring him back on the practice squad if another team submits a waiver claim.
