Do you remember when you first fell in love with football? Do you remember someone telling you, “It was just a game,” after your team suffered its first devastating loss? That didn't bring you much comfort when you heard it, did it? Over time, you learned to handle the losses a little better, especially if you're an older Philadelphia Eagles
fan who's had plenty of practice getting over disappointments. The truth is, football may just be a game. It's also more than that. Many of us played football, and it's partly how we learned to push ourselves, deal with adversity, and move past disappointment or failure.
On Monday, we were all caught off guard by the news about Jalen Hurts. It's a reminder that, as much as we love this game and the competition
it introduces, we can all rally around someone when something far more important than football is at stake.
Hurts will miss the remainder of the regular season because of blood clots in his lungs. Just like that, we're reminded that wins, losses, and completion percentages sometimes take a backseat to what matters more. It's difficult to worry about the Eagles' offensive struggles without also recognizing that their starting quarterback is facing a serious health issue that demands attention well beyond the football field.
The good news is that Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles expect a recovery, even though no timeline has been provided. That's outstanding news, and it's the most important silver lining of all. Wins will come again one day, but right now, the priority is making sure QB1 takes care of himself and gets healthy. The standings can wait. His health cannot. That's Jalen Hurts' top priority right now.
It's been a rough stretch for the Eagles family. Some of that comes from a loyal fan base's devotion to its team, while some of it stems fromgenuine concern for one of its stars. Still, hope springs eternal. This organization is synonymous with a city famous for its fight, so ahead of Week 7, here are two silver linings that could help brighten the clouds hanging over Philadelphia.
The entire NFC East continues to struggle
The result of the Washington Commanders' Week 6 game is still pending as of this story's release. Still, if early signs are any indication, it appears this won't just be a rough year for the Eagles. It may potentially be a rough year for the NFC East as a whole. Each loss by a division rival opens another door, and at the rate things are going, no one should be shocked if the team that wins the division finishes the season with a record hovering around .500. It's even possible that a team with a losing record could remain in contention for the division crown. We're a long way from the finish line.
That doesn't excuse Philadelphia's problems. The Eagles have to answer their offensive struggles, improve their discipline, and prove they can finish games. They cannot simply wait for their rivals to stumble and expect the standings to rescue their season.
Still, a struggling division offers something valuable: time. If the Eagles can stop their losing streak and play more consistently, they may not need a remarkable record to get back into the race. The NFC East remains a potential path back into contention, provided Philadelphia gives itself a reason to take it.
Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie are excellent at managing crises
We've seen this before. You remember the three straight NFC Championship Game losses, and before that, a 3-13 record in 1998. You remember the gradual regression of a Doug Pederson team after winning a Super Bowl and the questions that followed when it became clear that Philadelphia needed a new direction.
Through those difficult periods, Philadelphia has found ways to bounce back. The organization has faced painful setbacks, roster challenges, and tough decisions, yet it has also shown it can rebuild and return to contention. The Eagles' history isn't one of uninterrupted success, but it gives fans legitimate reasons to believe a bad stretch doesn't have to define the future.
The current situation adds an extra bonus. Philadelphia is led by Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman, two figures who have earned the benefit of the doubt by building a championship organization. Roseman has helped assemble rosters capable of competing at the highest level, while Lurie has provided ownership stability and a willingness to make difficult decisions when necessary. They have navigated adversity before, and the expectation is that they'll work to find a solution again.
That doesn't mean every decision will be right or that the Eagles are guaranteed to turn things around this season. Trust isn't a promise that everything will work out; it's confidence that the people responsible for fixing the problem have the experience and resources to make a serious attempt. Roseman and Lurie have earned that confidence, even if the current product on the field is testing everyone's patience.
Football may be just a game, but the community, memories, and resilience it creates are real. Philadelphia's fight has never been defined by avoiding adversity. It's been defined by what happens after adversity arrives. The Eagles have plenty of work ahead, but their history has taught us one thing: a difficult chapter doesn't have to be the final one.
