The Philadelphia Eagles spent part of Monday correcting the problems Jayden Daniels created outside the pocket. Their Week 2 opponent presents a similar concern.
Cam Ward combines high-level arm talent with enough mobility to punish undisciplined pass rushes.
Ward completed 19 of 32 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown during Tennessee’s season-opening loss to the New York Jets. He also rushed four times for 21 yards, showing his ability to escape pressure and extend possessions. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio praised Ward’s arm strength, athleticism, and continued development under Titans offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Philadelphia understands the challenge after Daniels hurt the defense with his legs, particularly during Washington’s
final two possessions. Fangio specifically identified quarterback scrambling as one reason the Eagles struggled to close the game.
The Eagles recorded one sack and did not consistently win their individual pass-rush matchups. When pressure arrived, defenders occasionally created escape lanes by losing rush-lane integrity.

That cannot happen against Ward.
Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith Jr., Arnold Ebiketie, and Philadelphia’s other edge defenders must pressure from controlled angles. Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Moro Ojomo must also compress the pocket without letting Ward escape through interior gaps. Tennessee allowed three sacks and scored only 10 points in Week 1, giving Philadelphia’s rush a chance to improve. Pressure alone, however, will not be enough. The Eagles must finish plays. If Ward escapes the initial rush, he possesses the arm strength to find Calvin Ridley or Carnell Tate after coverage begins to break down.
Philadelphia’s defensive plan must balance aggression with discipline.
