Key stats can show just how valuable a dominant standout player can be to a team's overall success. Lane Johnson’sindividual honors illustrate his excellence. Philadelphia’s record without him might explain his value even more clearly.Including playoff games, the Eagles were nearly unbeatable, going 122-63-1 with Johnson in the lineup entering their Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. They were 18-29 without him before losing 24-20 to Los Angeles, dropping their record without Johnson to 18-30.
That equates to a .659 winning percentage with Johnson and a .375 mark without him.
Johnson’s absences occurred across 14 seasons, several coaching staffs, and dramatically different roster situations. Still, the split is too large to dismiss.
Johnson allowed Philadelphia to handle elite pass rushers without consistently sending a tight end or running back to his side. That freedom created more passing options and helped the Eagles disguise their intentions.
His run blocking was equally influential. Johnson blocked for NFL rushing champions LeSean McCoy in 2013 and Saquon Barkley in 2024. Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards during Philadelphia’s second Super Bowl-winning season. The Eagles received an immediate look at life without Johnson during their Week 4 loss to Los Angeles. Philadelphia managed 172 total yards, went 0-for-12 on third down and failed to score after halftime.
Johnson’s retirement means the Eagles can no longer view that dramatic record split as a temporary concern. They must construct an offense capable of winning without the player who stabilized its right side for 14 seasons.
