The Philadelphia Eaglesunveiled their initial 53-man roster, and several interesting decisions were revealed. Four quarterbacks made the cut. Four tight ends survived roster reductions. Elijah Moore and Eli Stowers earned spots, while other hopefuls were left searching for their next opportunity.
Another detail may have been even more revealing. Think back to the 2026 NFL Draft for a second. Philadelphia entered the selection meeting with eight selections. The first five were utilized on offensive talent. The latter three, all seventh-rounders, were used to address the defense.
Fast forward to the present day. By the time roster cuts arrived, all five of the Eagles' offensive draft picks had secured spots on the initial 53-man roster.
First-round
receiver Makai Lemon made the team. Second-round tight end Eli Stowers made it. Third-round tackle Markel Bell survived cutdown day, as did fifth-round quarterback Cole Payton and sixth-round offensive lineman Micah Morris.
The defensive side of the draft told a different story. Philadelphia used its final three selections on defensive prospects Cole Wisniewski, Uar Bernard, and Keyshawn James-Newby. All three were waived as part of the team's roster reductions.
All of the Eagles' 2026 seventh-round picks are noticeably absent from the initial 53-man roster.
That doesn't necessarily mean the Eagles have given up on any of them. The expectation is that Wisniewski, Bernard, and James-Newby could return if they clear waivers and rejoin the organization via the practice squad. Bernard's status as an International Player Pathway participant would make him particularly valuable because he would not count against the NFL's 16-player practice squad limit.
Still, the split is noteworthy. The Eagles spent the early portions of the draft addressing offensive needs and retained every one of those investments on the active roster. Meanwhile, the defensive prospects selected later in the draft appear destined for a more traditional developmental path.
It's only one roster deadline, and plenty can change over the course of a long season. Still, Philadelphia's initial 53 offered an interesting glimpse into how the organization currently views its rookie class. For now, the Eagles appear to believe their offensive draft picks are ready to contribute immediately. Their defensive selections may require a little more time.
