The Philadelphia Eagles have secured another cornerstone of their defensive line with a record-setting contract.
Philadelphia and All-Pro defensive tackle Jalen Carter agreed to a four-year, $152 million extension, worth up to $160 million, with $106 million guaranteed, according to reports. The $38 million annual average makes Carter the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history. The agreement completes one of the Eagles’ most important pieces of offseason business while ensuring that one of the NFL’s premier young defenders remains in Philadelphia for the long term. The team had previously exercised Carter’s fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through 2027, but moved early rather than allowing uncertainty to develop around his future.
Carter has emerged as the centerpiece of Philadelphia’s defensive front since the Eagles selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. His combination of power, explosiveness and interior pass-rushing ability has made him one of the league’s most disruptive defensive linemen and a player opposing offenses must account for on every snap.
The extension also reinforces Philadelphia’s commitment to building through the defensive line. The Eagles signed fellow defensive tackle Jordan Davis to a three-year, $78 million extension earlier in the offseason, reportedly including $65 million guaranteed. Locking up both former Georgia teammates gives Philadelphia two foundational interior defenders entering their respective primes.

General manager Howie Roseman has consistently prioritized retaining homegrown stars before they reach the open market. Carter’s deal represents the latest example of that philosophy and removes what could have become a significant contract storyline during training camp.
The financial commitment brings enormous expectations, but Carter has already demonstrated the talent required to anchor Philadelphia’s defense. His next challenge will be to produce with the consistency expected of the highest-paid player at his position.
With Carter and Davis signed to long-term extensions, the Eagles have made their defensive philosophy unmistakable. Philadelphia intends to continue building from the inside out, and Carter will remain at the center of that plan.
