The Philadelphia Eagles
will open the 2026 season against the Washington Commanders with another talented defense under Vic Fangio. Philadelphia has star power at all three levels, but questions involving Jonathan Greenard’s availability, the edge-rusher rotation and several roles in the secondary could shape the opening-day lineup. With Week 1 approaching, here is our projection for the Eagles’ starting defense against Washington.Projected starters:
- DT: Jalen Carter
- NT: Jordan Davis
- DT: Moro Ojomo
- Edge: Nolan Smith Jr.
- Edge: Jalyx Hunt or Jonathan Greenard
- LB: Zack Baun
- LB: Jihaad Campbell
- CB: Riq Woolen
- CB: Quinyon Mitchell
- Nickel: Cooper DeJean
- S: Andrew Mukuba
- S: Marcus Epps
The Eagles technically have 12 projected starters because DeJean’s role will depend on the package. Philadelphia could use five defensive backs and remove a defensive lineman or linebacker. Greenard would start if his pectoral injury permits. If he is unavailable, Hunt should receive the first opportunity
opposite Smith, with A.J. Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie rotating behind them.
Carter will be the defensive front’s primary pass-rush threat. Davis and Ojomo should handle early downs, while Ty Robinson can enter on passing downs. Woolen and Mitchell give Philadelphia two long outside cornerbacks. DeJean can cover the slot, play safety, or move closer to the line of scrimmage.
The versatility of DeJean, Baun, and Campbell will allow Fangio to adjust the front without making a substitution.
