The Philadelphia Eagles opened their Week 2 practice schedule without two of the most important players on Vic Fangio’s defense. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter and defensive back Cooper DeJean did not participate in Wednesday’s practice as Philadelphia began preparing for Sunday’s road matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
Carter was listed with a wrist injury. His status will be worth monitoring because of his importance to Philadelphia’s pass rush and run defense. Carter’s ability to create interior pressure could be critical against Titans quarterback Cam Ward, who was sacked three times during Tennessee’s 23-10 loss to the New York Jets. DeJean was listed with calf and abdomen injuries. He appeared to grab his rib or midsection area after
making a second-quarter tackle on Washington wide receiver Stefon Diggs during Philadelphia’s season-opening victory. DeJean also wore a sleeve on his left leg at the start of Wednesday’s practice.

His versatility allows Fangio to use him at safety, in the slot, and closer to the line of scrimmage. Michael Carter II and Marcus Epps could receive expanded roles if DeJean is limited or unavailable. Philadelphia received encouraging news regarding Jonathan Greenard. The edge rusher was a limited participant because of the pectoral injury that kept him out of Week 1.
Greenard’s return to practice continues to show progress, but his participation over the next two days will determine whether he has a realistic shot at facing Tennessee.
