Washington’s
greatest strength entering Week 1 is not one position group. It is the variety that quarterback Jayden Daniels brings to the entire offense. Daniels can beat defenses from the pocket, escape pressure, and turn broken plays into significant gains. His mobility forces edge rushers to maintain discipline and makes man coverage dangerous because defensive backs can lose sight of the quarterback. The Commanders strengthened the personnel around him during the offseason. Terry McLaurin remains the primary downfield threat, while Stefon Diggs gives Daniels an experienced target who can separate underneath. Chig Okonkwo can stress linebackers and safeties through the middle of the field.
Washington also has several options in the backfield.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt is listed as the starter, with Rachaad White and Kaytron Allen behind him. Croskey-Merritt was listed as limited Wednesday because of a hamstring injury, but the Commanders have enough depth to maintain their rushing attack.
The Eagles must make Daniels uncomfortable without losing rush-lane integrity. Vic Fangio can use Cooper DeJean, Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, and Philadelphia’s versatile secondary to disguise coverages, but every defender must remain aware of Daniels’ ability to run.
Philadelphia has the personnel to control the matchup. The challenge will be to make Washington sustain long drives rather than letting Daniels create explosive plays through improvisation.
