One of the biggest questions surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles entering training camp was whether the defense had enough depth to withstand the inevitable injuries. That's just part of the deal in a long NFL season. We knew about the star power. This unit literally has stars or potential stars at every level.
The concerns were more so about the talent on the back half of the depth chart. The first week of camp is beginning to offer an encouraging answer. Even while several projected starters were held out of team drills, one of the biggest takeaways was that the defense continued to make life difficult for the offense.
Sure, some of that can be related to an offensive learning curve. Still, even when starters sat out, the offense rarely exposed
weaknesses consistently. The next wave of defenders stepped into larger roles and maintained the aggressive, disciplined style that has become synonymous with Vic Fangio's defenses.
The Eagles' defensive depth is beginning to show early.
Linebacker Zack Baun, defensive back Cooper DeJean and cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Riq Woolen were all held out of team drills on Wednesday. Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Michael Carter II, Jonathan Jones and Kelee Ringo saw action with the first team in their respective absences. Depth is one of the hardest qualities to evaluate during an NFL offseason. Guys are wearing shorts. Padded practices are the exception.
Every roster looks talented on paper in May, but training camp is where coaches begin installs. The hope is by the time we reach joint practices and preseason games, we can really see how guys are progressing. Camp helps us discover whether the players behind the starters can execute the scheme without a significant drop-off. The Eagles appear to be finding those answers early.
Veteran defensive backs and younger contributors alike capitalized on additional snaps, while the front seven continued to disrupt the running game and pressure the offense. Just as importantly, there didn't appear to be a noticeable decline in communication or execution despite multiple starters watching from the sideline.
That's the type of consistency championship-caliber defenses strive for. Philadelphia has invested heavily in building waves of talent rather than relying exclusively on its stars. When backups can step into meaningful practice reps and maintain the standard, it speaks to both the roster construction and the coaching staff's ability to prepare players across the depth chart.
It's also an encouraging sign with the regular season still weeks away. Few teams make it through a 17-game schedule without losing key contributors for stretches, making dependable depth almost as valuable as elite starters.
Training camp performances should always be viewed with the proper perspective, and no single practice guarantees regular-season success. Still, one trend has become difficult to ignore: the Eagles' defense continues to look competitive regardless of who's on the field.
If that trend carries into September, Philadelphia won't simply enter the season with one of the NFL's most talented starting defenses. It could also have one of its deepest teams for a team with legitimate championship aspirations, which may prove just as important. The stars may grab the headlines this fall, but if the first week of training camp is any indication, the Eagles' championship hopes could ultimately rest on the players behind them.
