Saquon Barkley is one of the NFL’s most dangerous runners once he builds momentum, and the Tennessee Titans want to prevent the Philadelphia Eagles star from reaching that point Sunday.
Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons told reporters that Tennessee’s priority must be forcing Barkley to stop his feet in the backfield. Simmons acknowledged Barkley’s ability to consistently turn broken plays and crowded running lanes into positive gains but likes Tennessee’s chances if the defense can slow him down before he reaches the line of scrimmage.
That is easier said than done.
Barkley rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries in Philadelphia’s season-opening victory over Washington. His final numbers were powered by a 42-yard run, but the explosive gain showed
what happens when Barkley reaches the second level with room to accelerate. The Titans cannot let him build that momentum. Simmons and Tennessee’s interior defensive linemen must create penetration, disrupt Philadelphia’s blocking combinations, and force Barkley to change direction before the play develops.

Tennessee’s linebackers and defensive backs must then close the available cutback lanes. Barkley has the balance and lower-body strength to escape initial contact, making coordinated pursuit essential. The Jets provided Philadelphia with a possible blueprint in Week 1. Breece Hall rushed for 102 yards on 22 carries as New York controlled the football for nearly 39 minutes in its 23-10 victory over Tennessee.
Simmons’ individual matchup against Philadelphia’s interior offensive line will be critical. If he can reset the line of scrimmage and make Barkley hesitate, the Titans could prevent another game-changing run. If Barkley gets downhill cleanly, Tennessee’s problems will extend well beyond its defensive front.
