DeVonta Smith enters the 2026 season as the unquestioned leader of Philadelphia’s wide receiver room, and former Eagles receiver Jason Avant believes he possesses one of the NFL’s most complete skill sets. Avant said during an appearance on SportsRadio 94WIP that Smith is a “more well-rounded receiver than A.J. Brown.”
The comparison does not diminish Brown, who combined size, strength, and explosiveness to become one of the most productive receivers in Eagles history before being traded to New England. It highlights Smith’s ability to win in several different ways. A Heisman Trophy winner, Smith can separate from defensive backs with precise routes, threaten defenses vertically, work from multiple alignments, and make difficult catches outside
his frame. His understanding of leverage allows him to create openings without relying on overwhelming size or strength.
Those qualities should become even more important following Brown’s departure. Smith is no longer sharing top billing in Philadelphia’s passing game. He will draw the opponent’s best cornerback, additional safety attention, and coverage plans specifically designed to limit him. Smith is coming off his third 1,000-yard season, finishing 2025 with 77 catches for 1,008 yards and four touchdowns. He narrowly surpassed Brown, who recorded 1,003 yards during his final season with Philadelphia.

The Eagles will surround Smith with Hollywood Brown, Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon and Elijah Moore, but none enters the season with his combination of production, experience and chemistry with Jalen Hurts. Avant played eight seasons in Philadelphia and built his career on route-running, reliable hands, and attention to detail. His evaluation carries weight because those same characteristics help make Smith effective.
Brown was the more physically imposing receiver. Avant believes Smith is the more complete one. Now Smith has an opportunity to prove he can thrive as Philadelphia’s clear No. 1 option.
