The Eagles are reshuffling their injury-depleted backfield again, bringing back a familiar veteran while moving on from several recent depth options.
Philadelphia announced Tuesday that it signed running back Elijah Mitchell to the practice squad and waived Jaydon Blue. The Eagles also waived Carson Steele with an injury designation and released running back Ian Wheeler and center James Brockermeyer from the practice squad.
Mitchell returns to an organization he joined in June before being placed on injured reserve in August. His familiarity with Philadelphia’s offense could help him get up to speed as the Eagles prepare for their Week 7 matchup against Dallas. The moves follow another difficult afternoon for the Eagles’ running backs. Steele
exited Sunday’s 25-14 loss to Carolina with an arm injury, further thinning a group already dealing with injuries to Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby.

Philadelphia placed Bigsby on injured reserve Oct. 6 and Shipley on injured reserve Oct. 16. The Eagles had promoted Steele to the active roster Oct. 9 before signing Blue to the active roster last Saturday. Wheeler’s practice squad stint lasted less than a week after he signed Oct. 15.
Mitchell’s addition gives Philadelphia another option to evaluate during the practice week. A practice squad signing doesn't guarantee he will play against Dallas, but the departures of Blue, Steele and Wheeler create another significant shift in the available backfield depth.
Dameon Pierce, whom Philadelphia promoted from the practice squad earlier this month, remains part of that picture as the Eagles work through their injury concerns.
For a team attempting to end a four-game losing streak, establishing a dependable running back rotation remains an immediate priority. Tuesday’s transactions give Mitchell a chance to help stabilize a position that has required repeated adjustments.
