The Philadelphia Eagles enter their preseason finale with an opportunity to settle several decisions before the roster is reduced to 53 players. Friday’s game against Cincinnati is not a referendum on Philadelphia’s championship chances. It is the last extended audition for reserves and a final chance to evaluate how Sean Mannion’s offense operates under game conditions.
Here are the five biggest questions entering the matchup.
1. Can Tanner McKee finish the backup quarterback argument?
McKee made the stronger case against New England, completing 16 of 22 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Andy Dalton’s experience still matters, but performance must carry weight.
If both play Friday, McKee needs to sustain his timing and decision-making. Dalton needs to demonstrate why the Eagles should prefer him
over Jalen Hurts when Hurts is unavailable.
2. Who provides the most value in the final receiver spot?
DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon lead the room. Hollywood Brown and Darius Cooper have also built strong cases.
That places particular importance on Britain Covey and Elijah Moore. Covey’s return ability could decide the comparison, but Moore has another opportunity to show that his offensive contribution warrants a place.
3. Can the offensive line reserves finish a promising summer?
Drew Kendall and Willie Lampkin have helped their standing, while Markel Bell has shown why Philadelphia invested in him. Health complicates the final evaluation, particularly for Bell and Lampkin.
Myles Hinton, Cameron Williams, Jake Majors and Michael Jordan must make their remaining snaps count.
4. Is there room for Carson Steele alongside Will Shipley?
Shipley’s 56 rushing yards and touchdown against New England strengthened his RB3 case. Steele made his argument through receiving and versatility.
The question may be whether Philadelphia retains both rather than which player wins one job. Dameon Pierce’s return adds another option to the discussion.
5. Can the backups at CB and safety finish possessions?
The Eagles have received splash plays from their defensive reserves, but preventing explosive gains and completing late-game stops remain important. Cincinnati’s backup quarterbacks and receivers should provide enough of a test. Philadelphia needs to see coverage discipline, clean tackles and communication that holds up when the offense changes tempo.
The Patriots game clarified several evaluations. Friday should help determine which of those trends deserve to shape the initial roster.
