Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has made his first important decision.
Mannion will call plays from the sideline Saturday when the Eagles
open their preseason against the Baltimore Ravens, giving Philadelphia its first live look at its new offensive coordinator in a game setting. Mannion had said last week that he was still deciding whether he would operate from the sideline or the coaching booth.The decision gives Mannion an opportunity to experience the full game-day operation from the same vantage point as the rest of Philadelphia's coaching staff. Mannion previously served as the Green Bay Packers' quarterbacks coach before Philadelphia hired him as its offensive coordinator this offseason. The preseason opener will not be about judging the Eagles' offense strictly by points or statistics. Mannion has emphasized execution, play style and establishing clean game-day operations as priorities for the preseason. That makes the sideline decision particularly important. Mannion will get to work through communication, substitutions, adjustments and play-calling in real time while surrounded by his offensive staff.
Saturday represents the beginning of a new chapter for Philadelphia's offense. The Eagles have spent months installing Mannion's system. Now, they get to see how it operates when the scoreboard is running, and the new offensive coordinator is making the calls.
