The Philadelphia Eagles never expected training camp to revolve around their reserve wide receivers, but that's exactly where part of the spotlight has shifted. With DeVonta Smith and rookie first-round pick Makai Lemon both missing practice time due to hamstring injuries
, someone had to absorb the extra opportunities. Dontayvion Wicks and Darius Cooper haven't simply filled the void. They've used it to earn something far more valuable than additional reps. They're earning Jalen Hurts' trust.
Dontayvion Wicks and Darius Cooper continue stacking impressive days.
If training camp has revealed one thing about Philadelphia's receiver room, it's that Hurts isn't limiting his confidence to established veterans. Sure, as mentioned, filling in to gain valuable practice reps has helped, but let's not be misleading. Cooper
and Wicks have balled out whoever has been on the field. They are certainly making the most of every opportunity.
Wicks has quietly become one of the offense's most reliable targets andseems destined to earn the WR2 job. Whether working back to the football, creating separation on intermediate routes, or making contested catches, the former Green Bay Packers receiver has consistently answered the bell. His familiarity with offensive coordinator Sean Mannion's system has certainly helped, but his production has spoken louder than his resume.

After Wednesday's practice, Hurts was available to the media. He explained why Wicks has caught his attention.
"He's got great work ethic. He's got great hunger. In the summertime, he was beating down the door trying to spend that time and just work... He's twitchy and can attack the ball. When you talk about adversity, you learn alot about the guys around you around this time... It's humid. It's sticky. It's hot. You see who's got that anger to them. Who's got a little bit of rage in them, for the best? He's got it. That's exciting to see. [He] runs great routes, and it will be exciting to see him work this season"
Those comments aren't insignificant. Quarterbacks don't hand out praise lightly, particularly when discussing receivers fighting for roles. Wicks recently explained that the chemistry developing between himself and Hurts has come through countless extra repetitions and conversations away from practice.

Cooper has built a similar case for himself. He has piled up routine receptions, but that isn't all. The second-year receiver has repeatedly produced highlight-worthy moments, including spectacular one-handed grabs and contested catches against Philadelphia's top defenders.

He recently explained that much of his growth has come from slowing the game down mentally. He, like everyone else, is mastering the details of the offense.

That progress hasn't gone unnoticed. During an interview with NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Brian Baldinger, Hurts identified Cooper as another young receiver who has stood out throughout camp.
"I think Darius Cooper has done a really good job... He's always been a big-bodied, physical, strong-hands guy, but just to see how he's transitioned going into year two, I'm definitely excited for him, along with the rest of them. This is just a beautiful time to get to learn your teammates."
Those words reinforce what practices have suggested for weeks. Philadelphia entered camp believing it had answers at the top of the depth chart. What it may be discovering is something equally important: dependable options beneath it. Injuries created the opportunity, but Wicks and Cooper have also ensured their momentum isn't tied only to teammates being unavailable. Every catch, every rep and every compliment from Hurts brings them one step closer to becoming trusted safety valves once the regular season begins.
