The Philadelphia Eagleshave reached a point where the small corrections are no longer enough.Five consecutive losseshave exposed problems that extend beyond a few missed tackles or an untimely turnover. Monday night's loss to the Dallas Cowboys
showed how quickly things can unravel. Philadelphia has struggled to dictate the terms of games, leaving little margin for error when the offense stalls or the defense fails to stop the opponent. The Eagles' 2-5 record has heightened the urgency, but winning against the Commanders won't simply cure the path forward. Injuries have made stringing together a playable Eagles roster challenging each week, but Philadelphia still has a red-zone advantage.
The Eagles must find a way to stop the run
Philadelphia's run defense has become a persistent liability,
and the Cowboys exposed it by repeatedly winning at the line of scrimmage in Week 7. Dallas entered Sunday's game among the league's least productive rushing teams, but it finished with 204 rushing yards. That kind of performance gives an opponent control of the game, creates manageable down-and-distance situations, and makes the defense's other responsibilities more difficult.
The Eagles must improve their gap discipline, shed blocks, and finish tackles against Washington. Jayden Daniels' mobility adds another challenge because defenders cannot abandon their assignments in pursuit. Remember, he added 31 of Washington's 132 rushing yards against Philadelphia in Week 1. Philadelphia needs to make opponents work for every yard instead of letting routine gains dictate the flow of the game.
The pass rush needs to make an impact
The Eagles haven't generated enough disruption to offset their struggles elsewhere on defense. Through seven games, Philadelphia has recorded only eight sacks and three takeaways, leaving the unit without the game-changing plays that can rescue a struggling performance. Against Dallas, Dak Prescott wasn't sacked or hit, allowing him to operate all night comfortably.
Washington's protection will give Philadelphia another opportunity to change that pattern. The Eagles need coordinated pressure, not reliance on individual rushers, to win consistently, and the secondary must capitalize when the quarterback is forced to speed up his decisions. Without that disruption, opposing offenses can remain patient and keep the defense on the field. There's one issue. Vic Fangio hasn't shown any desire to consistently send extra defenders via the blitz.
The Eagles must stop collapsing the second-half onslaughts
Philadelphia's inability to maintain its defensive level of play after the break has become one of its most damaging trends. The Eagles have surrendered 99 second-half points in seven games, and their five-game losing streak has featured a particularly steep halftime drop-off.
Opponents have repeatedly found ways to adjust while Philadelphia has struggled to respond. That pattern makes halftime adjustments and in-game execution essential against Washington. The Eagles cannot assume a promising start will carry them through the final two quarters; they must recognize what opponents are changing and answer before the game gets away from them.
The offense must sustain its early success
There were clear signs of progress against Dallas, including touchdown drives on Philadelphia's first two possessions and a rare scoring drive that capped the Eagles' first third-quarter drive. Those stretches showed the offense can move the ball with purpose, but isolated possessions will not be enough to overcome the team's defensive shortcomings.
With Tanner McKee under center, the offense needs to build on that progress by sustaining drives, protecting the football, and balancing the run and pass. The challenge is to make productive possessions the standard, not the exception. Against Washington, Philadelphia needs a complete performance in which offensive momentum survives adversity, and the defense finally gives it a chance to matter.
The secondary must reverse its regression
Philadelphia's coverage problems have become too pronounced to treat them as a byproduct of the pass rush alone. The Eagles allowed three touchdown passes to Dak Prescott on Monday night, with CeeDee Lamb catching two and George Pickens adding another as Dallas bullied the home team en route to 38 points. T
The secondary struggled to contain the Cowboys' receivers, and Riq Woolen's coverage issues helped set up a key scoring drive. He's seemingly attacked weekly, often with the other team finding success or, at minimum, a drive-extending penalty.
The bigger concern is that Philadelphia hasn't consistently turned coverage opportunities into stops or takeaways. The Eagles have recorded only three interceptions through 244 opponent pass attempts, leaving little room for error when the pass rush fails to disrupt the quarterback.
Against Washington, the secondary must communicate more effectively, limit separation, and finish plays without costly penalties. Pressure can help the coverage, but the defensive backs also need to hold up when the quarterback has time to throw.
