Zach Ertz’s return to the Philadelphia Eagles gives the Super Bowl hero an opportunity to finish some unfinished business. Ertz is signing with Philadelphia’s practice squad after Dallas Goedert suffered a sprained MCL during Sunday’s victory over Tennessee. Beyond helping the Eagles navigate Goedert’s absence, Ertz is positioned to make franchise history.
Ertz recorded 579 receptions during his first stint in Philadelphia. Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Harold Carmichael owns the franchise record with 589, according to Pro Football Reference. That leaves Ertz 10 receptions away from tying Carmichael and 11 from becoming the Eagles’ all-time leader. Ertz already holds Philadelphia’s single-season receptions record after catching 116
passes in 2018. He also ranks fifth in franchise history with 6,267 receiving yards and is the organization's most productive tight end.

His place in Eagles history was secure before this reunion. Ertz caught the go-ahead touchdown in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LII victory over New England and earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2017 through 2019. The Eagles initially brought Ertz back because they needed an experienced receiving option behind Goedert. The practice-squad signing gives him time to prepare before potentially joining the active roster.
If Ertz can contribute during Goedert’s absence, he could do more than help Philadelphia survive an early-season injury. He could complete his return by taking possession of one of the most significant records in franchise history.
