Dontayvion Wicks needed only two games to join some memorable names in Philadelphia Eagles history. Tasked with replacing A.J. Brown, Wicks has seven receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown through his first two games with the Eagles. He produced 73 yards and a score against Washington before catching five passes for 74 yards in Philadelphia’s victory over Tennessee.
According to Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Wicks is the first player in 18 years to surpass 70 receiving yards in each of his first two games with the Eagles. The last was DeSean Jackson in 2008. Jackson opened his rookie season with 106 yards against the St. Louis Rams and followed that performance with 110 yards against the Dallas Cowboys. Only two other players reached
70 yards in each of their first two Philadelphia appearances: Don Looney in 1940 and Donte’ Stallworth in 2006.
Wicks’ explosive-play production makes the start even more encouraging. He already has as many receptions of at least 20 yards through two games as he recorded all of last season. The former Green Bay Packers receiver has quickly become a dependable option for Jalen Hurts, particularly when Philadelphia must extend possessions. Wicks caught all five of his targets against Tennessee, and each reception produced a first down.
DeVonta Smith remains the centerpiece of the receiving corps, but Wicks is giving the Eagles another physical, versatile target who can win at multiple levels. His first two performances suggest Philadelphia acquired more than complementary depth. Wicks is beginning to establish himself as one of the offense’s most important playmakers.
