The Philadelphia Eagles will begin the regular season without one of the most accomplished players in their revamped pass-rushing rotation.
Philadelphia ruled out edge rusher Jonathan Greenard for Sunday’s home opener against the Washington Commanders because of a pectoral injury. Rookie tight end Eli Stowers is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury. Both players were limited participants in Friday’s practice, but Greenard was not cleared to play. His absence creates a significant opportunity for Jalyx Hunt, Arnold Ebiketie and Nolan Smith Jr. against a Washington offense that will have its full complement of edge rushers available.
The Eagles signed Greenard to add an established pass rusher who can set the edge and consistently pressure
opposing quarterbacks. His Philadelphia debut will have to wait at least another week.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will now have to adjust his rotation and determine which edge defender can provide the most dependable snaps opposite the other projected starters. Hunt and Smith offer athleticism, while Ebiketie gives the group another experienced option.
Stowers’ status creates less urgency because Philadelphia still has Dallas Goedert and Johnny Mundt available at tight end. The second-round rookie could provide another receiving option for Jalen Hurts, however, particularly in the red zone and on third down.
Stowers’ availability may not be determined until closer to kickoff. Even if active, his workload could be limited after dealing with a hamstring issue during the final week of preparation. Greenard’s absence is the larger concern entering a divisional matchup against Washington. Philadelphia’s reworked defensive front will face its first test without one of its most proven additions.
