Defense still wins championships. Just ask the Seattle Seahawks, whose dominant unit carried them to a Super Bowl LX title. Or ask the Philadelphia Eagles, for that matter, after befuddling Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes on football's grandest stage one year prior.
Look at the Houston Texans, who spent last season overwhelming opposing quarterbacks without relying heavily on the blitz. Across the league, the NFL's top contenders continue to prove that elite defenses are built through dominant defensive lines, opportunistic secondaries and coordinators capable of maximizing both.

at key positions. The pieces are certainly in place for another deep playoff run. Still, a handful of teams enter the season with either more proven production or greater continuity. Here's how the NFL's top five defenses stack up entering the 2026 campaign.
1. Houston Texans
The Texans have become the blueprint for building a modern defense. Houston consistently generated pressure without sacrificing numbers in coverage, allowing one of the NFL's most talented secondaries to capitalize on hurried throws.
Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter give opposing offensive tackles one of the league's toughest assignments every week, while Derek Stingley Jr. remains among the game's premier shutdown cornerbacks. Houston was already one of the NFL's stingiest run defenses before adding another physical presence to the interior during the draft. If that move further strengthens an already formidable front, the Texans could separate themselves from the rest of the league.
2. Seattle Seahawks
The defending Super Bowl champions return with much of the group that powered them to the NFL's top scoring defense. Mike Macdonald has built one of football's most disciplined units, one that consistently wins on third down, limits explosive plays and forces offenses to sustain lengthy drives.
Byron Murphy II continues to emerge as one of the league's best young defensive tackles, while Devon Witherspoon and Nick Emmanwori give Seattle tremendous versatility in the secondary.
The departures of Riq Woolen and Coby Bryant create legitimate questions in the defensive backfield, but the Seahawks still possess enough returning talent to remain among the league's elite.
3. Denver Broncos
Few defenses have played more consistently over the past two seasons than that of the Denver Broncos. Vance Joseph has transformed his unit into one of football's most aggressive and fundamentally sound defensive teams. A relentless pass rush led by Nik Bonitto and Zach Allen regularly disrupts opposing quarterbacks, while Patrick Surtain II continues to erase one side of the field.
Replacing veteran defensive tackle John Franklin-Myers won't be easy, and Denver would benefit from generating more turnovers after frequently pressuring quarterbacks without producing enough takeaways. Even so, the Broncos remain firmly among the NFL's defensive heavyweights.
4. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams have assembled one of the league's deepest defensive rosters. Their defensive front already ranked among the NFL's best at creating pressure, and offseason additions have only strengthened a unit that was difficult to block a year ago.
Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske continue forming one of football's better young interior duos, while improvements in the secondary should make life even more difficult for opposing quarterbacks. Continuity isn't quite as strong here as it is for the three teams ranked ahead of them, but the overall talent level makes Los Angeles a legitimate candidate to finish the season with the NFL's top defense.
5. Philadelphia Eagles
Fifth may seem low for a defense with this much talent, but the Eagles have every opportunity to climb these rankings. A healthy Jalen Carter could completely transform the front after injuries limited his impact last season. Jordan Davis and Moro Ojomo are coming off breakout campaigns, giving Philadelphia one of the NFL's strongest interior defensive line rotations.
Jonathan Greenard adds another proven edge rusher, while former Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen provides a much-needed answer opposite Quinyon Mitchell in the secondary.Perhaps the biggest advantage remains Vic Fangio.
Few defensive minds have consistently fielded elite units the way Philadelphia's coordinator has throughout his career. If Carter returns to dominant form and the Eagles' offseason additions quickly settle into their roles, there won't be many weaknesses for opposing offenses to exploit.
The difference between first and fifth on this list is remarkably slim. Houston, Seattle, Denver, Los Angeles and Philadelphia all have the personnel to finish the season atop the NFL's defensive rankings.
The Eagles begin 2026 fifth, but they may also have the highest ceiling of the group. If Fangio gets a healthy season from his stars and his newest additions perform as expected, Philadelphia won't just challenge the league's elite defenses—it could become the unit every offense hopes to avoid come playoff time.
