The Eagles are releasing veteran running back Dameon Pierce as they continue trimming their roster to 53 players, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Philadelphia would like to bring Pierce back on the practice squad, leaving open the possibility that his time with the organization will continue beyond Sunday’s roster deadline.
Pierce signed a one-year contract with the Eagles in March after finishing the 2025 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He entered training camp competing for a reserve role behind Saquon Barkley, but a hamstring injury cost him valuable practice time and prevented him from building momentum. The move leaves Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley as Philadelphia’s remaining running backs. Bigsby offers power and experience
as the primary backup, while Shipley brings value as a runner, receiver and special teams contributor.

Pierce’s release follows Philadelphia’s decision to move on from Carson Steele, who was one of the offense’s most productive preseason players. The Eagles apparently determined that three running backs were enough for the initial roster, particularly with spots needed elsewhere. A fourth-round pick by Houston in 2022, Pierce rushed for 939 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie. That experience would make him useful insurance if he returns.
A practice-squad reunion would allow Philadelphia to retain depth behind Barkley without using an initial 53-man roster spot. It would also give the Eagles a player familiar with Sean Mannion’s offense who could be elevated if injuries create a need.
As a vested veteran, Pierce is free to consider other opportunities, making a return possible rather than guaranteed.
