With nothing going right for the Philadelphia Eagles this season, they may pull one of their top pass-catchers from the lineup until he's fully healthy. When speaking with the media on Saturday, head coach Nick Sirianni was asked about potentially shutting down DeVonta Smith as he continues to deal with an ongoing hamstring injury:
I just want him to continue to get better. We'll see where that goes. He works extremely hard. Nobody takes care of their body like DeVonta Smith. He is such a good example to everybody of how to take care of yourself. He's the first one in here getting treatment, doing his prehab before a practice, and sometimes the process doesn't always produce the results you want.
But that's what you can control, and that's what's
ultimately going to make you be at the best that you can be. So it's been unfortunate there, but we'll see where he is. I do love how he goes about his business, and regardless of the outcome, I know DeVonta Smith well enough that he'll continue to go through his process, because that's what's made him the player that he has been.
Smith has 26 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns in four games. Smith first tweaked his hamstring in early August and missed about two weeks of training camp. He was fine for Week 1, then reaggravated the injury in the Week 2 win over Tennessee. Smith played through it for a while before the Eagles sat him in back-to-back contests against the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars.
The former Heisman winner returned to action last Sunday against Carolina and looked like himself, catching seven passes on 14 targets for 75 yards and a touchdown with Tanner McKee under center. Smith hasn't practiced this week, and his status for Monday night against Dallas is reportedly in doubt.
Sense I got as of yesterday was that DeVonta Smith and Tay Wicks were going to be down this week, but there was optimism that Dallas Goedert could go. Several days to go here … https://t.co/pjYwaOygY2

Given the team's current state (2-4 with Jalen Hurts ruled out for the year), the Eagles may embrace playing young guys and focus on landing a higher draft selection sooner rather than later. Still, the NFC East is far from decided, and the organization could opt to remain competitive.
Either way, DeVonta Smith's long-term health should be the top priority.
