The Philadelphia Eagles have no shortage of experience in their locker room, but injuries can quickly change a team's leadership dynamic. When established voices are unavailable, someone else has to make sure the standard doesn't slip. That responsibility doesn't disappear just because a captain is watching from the sideline.
Head coach Nick Sirianni spoke with the local media on Friday. He detailed which players he expects to help fill that void as Philadelphia navigates its injury issues. His answer made clear that he isn't placing the responsibility on one player or looking for a single replacement voice.
Instead, Sirianni pointed to a group of leaders throughout the roster, including players who have already earned that trust and others developing
into bigger leadership roles. He began with several players recognized by their teammates.
"I think that Saquon is a phenomenal leader. The guys that got voted captain are phenomenal leaders, and we still have guys that are healthy that are still playing. [T] Jordan [Mailata], Saquon, [LB] Zack [Baun], I know Smitty’s [WR DeVonta Smith] been banged up, [QB] Jalen [Hurts], all those guys. [DT] Jordan Davis, he’s a great leader. There’s a reason these guys were voted captain."
The list didn't end with the team's established captains. Sirianni also identified "other guys that have a great desire to win football games and to continue to improve." Here's what he offered on that note.
"I think about guys as I think about where they sit in the room, like Moro Ojomo is a great leader, Cooper DeJean, Quinyon [Mitchell], Dallas Goedert, Landon [Dickerson]... All these guys have the capabilities of doing that and are going out and leading by example. When they need to be vocal, they are... I really believe that we have good leaders that were voted captains and then other guys that can carry it as well that are future leaders. I think about Nolan Smith. There are future leaders that can really have the opportunity to lead. It’s like guys that get an opportunity to play when there’s injuries. Well, that also goes with leadership as well."
These distinctions matter for a team dealing with injuries across multiple position groups. Leadership isn't always about delivering a speech or commanding attention in the locker room. It can mean setting the tone in practice, holding teammates accountable, and keeping the standard consistent when things get difficult.
That development won't happen overnight, but Philadelphia needs its next group of leaders to emerge as the roster works through a challenging stretch. The Eagles have plenty of familiar names to lean on, but Sirianni's comments suggest he expects leadership to be shared throughout the locker room. Injuries may change who is available on Sunday, but they don't excuse a drop in accountability during the week. Philadelphia needs that collective presence to remain intact if it hopes to get its season back on track.
