The Philadelphia Eagles have spent the summer evaluating a crowded wide receiver room. With one preseason game remaining, the strongest roster cases are becoming easier to identify. DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon are central to the offense. The more difficult decisions involve the players behind them and how much value Philadelphia places on special teams.
Here is how the competition should be viewed as it enters the finale.
The clear roster foundations: Smith, Wicks and Lemon
Smith remains Philadelphia’s leading receiver. Wicks has established himself in Sean Mannion’s offense, while Lemon’s first-round investment and projected role make his place secure. The return of Smith and Lemon has also allowed the Eagles to evaluate the rest of the room within a more complete offensive
structure.
Hollywood Brown has done enough
Brown’s experience and ability to threaten defenses give Philadelphia a useful fourth option. His place should not depend on whether he produces the largest preseason stat line. The Eagles need receivers who can step in and handle a defined assignment. Brown offers that possibility without requiring the offense to resemble the one he previously played.
Darius Cooper has earned a place
Cooper’s roster case is supported by a summer of productive work and his response in the second preseason game.
The Eagles should reward the player who has consistently placed himself in the conversation through his performance. Cooper offers another receiver capable of working within the timing of the passing game rather than simply filling a depth-chart position.
Britain Covey should get the narrow edge for the sixth spot
This is a projection, not an announced decision. Covey’s return value gives him an advantage in a comparison that may not be decided by receiving alone. His offensive contribution against New England helped. If Philadelphia keeps six receivers, a player who can handle returns and provide dependable reserve snaps makes sense.
Elijah Moore remains the difficult omission
Moore has enough ability to make this a legitimate decision. The issue is how many receivers Philadelphia can retain while addressing needs at other positions. A strong finale could change the calculation. For now, Smith, Wicks, Lemon, Brown, Cooper and Covey provide the most convincing six-player combination.
Danny Gray, Quez Watkins, Samori Toure, Erik Ezukanma and Tahj Washington are competing to alter that conclusion or continue their opportunities after cuts. The final game matters, but the Eagles should evaluate the entire summer rather than reward a single isolated highlight.
