The Eagles earned the result they needed in Week 1, securing another season-opening win, but their 24-22 victory over Washington looked more like survival than a championship statement.
Philadelphia’s first half displayed the balance Sean Mannion envisioned. Wicks stretched the field, Goedert worked the middle, Barkley supplied an explosive run, and rookie Makai Lemon contributed as a blocker and receiver. That balance disappeared after halftime.
The Eagles opened the third quarter with three consecutive three-and-outs. Washington defensive coordinator Daronte Jones increased the pressure, disrupted Philadelphia’s protection, and forced Hurts to operate under constant stress.
Hurts completed only one of five attempts for 9 yards against pressure,
although that completion was his touchdown pass to Wicks. Philadelphia allowed three sacks, and holding penalties prevented the offense from establishing any rhythm.
Hurts responded well. Facing third-and-17 on the most important possession of the game, he escaped the pocket and ran 22 yards. Lemon delivered an important block downfield, and Goedert finished the drive with a 43-yard touchdown.
Philadelphia’s defense was not perfect, either. Cooper DeJean allowed his first career touchdown from the slot when Daniels connected with Stefon Diggs. Still, Carter blocked an extra point, Campbell recorded his first sack, and Ojomo stopped Washington’s two-point conversion.
The Eagles showed enough balance and resilience to win, but they also exposed protection and consistency issues they must address before Week 2.
