Saquon Barkley was suited up and warming up as the Philadelphia Eagles began practice Thursday, an encouraging sight after he suffered a stinger against the Tennessee Titans.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane reported that Barkley expects to play against the Chicago Bears. The Eagles host no such game Sunday, as McLane’s post stated; Philadelphia plays at Chicago on Monday night. Barkley’s participation level was not clear during the portion of practice open to reporters, and the team’s injury report will provide his official designation.
There was a separate question in the backfield. According to McLane, Tank Bigsby was present but did not participate in the drills reporters observed. Tim McManus reported that Bigsby was working off to the side.
The reason for his absence from team work was not immediately clear. Barkley left Sunday’s win over Tennessee after suffering the stinger on Philadelphia’s first offensive play. He later returned, although his workload remained limited. Bigsby helped carry the rushing workload while Barkley was out, making both running backs’ practice status relevant as the Eagles prepare for Chicago.
For now, Barkley’s presence on the field and the report that he expects to play are positive signs. The Eagles still have several days before Monday’s game, and their injury reports will show whether Barkley can increase his workload and when Bigsby returns to practice.
