The Eagles plan to keep retired right tackle Lane Johnson on their 53-man roster for the rest of the season, according to The Athletic's Zach Berman, giving Philadelphia a temporary way to manage the salary-cap fallout from his departure.
Johnson’s playing career has ended, but thefinancial implications will shape Howie Roseman’s roster decisions for years. Ian Rapoport reported that keeping Johnson on the roster offers a 2026 solution while Philadelphia works through the longer-term consequences of his contract. The immediate tradeoff is a roster spot occupied by a player who will not take the field. For an Eagles team already dealing with injuries across its offense, that makes the available depth and weekly practice squad elevations more important.
Lane Johnson will be listed among the inactives today.

My understanding is that this will be the case throughout the season and that the current plan is to keep Johnson on the 53-man roster.
There are salary cap implications if Johnson is placed on the reserve/retired list with…
Philadelphia has turned to rookie Markel Bell at right tackle and elevated John Ojukwu for Sunday’s matchup against Jacksonville in London. The Eagles also signed center Jake Majors to the active roster after trading Cam Jurgens to Baltimore and ruling out Drew Kendall with a knee injury.
Eagles are not expected to launch a selloff
Johnson’s retirement and the Jurgens trade have raised questions about Philadelphia’s direction, but Rapoport also reported that the team isn't expected to launch a broader selloff.
That leaves the Eagles trying to stabilize their roster while continuing to compete. Moving Jurgens brought back draft capital, but the report indicates Philadelphia isn't treating the move as the start of a wholesale teardown.
Keeping Johnson on the roster addresses one financial issue for this season. Protecting Jalen Hurts and getting consistent production from a reshuffled offensive line remain the more immediate challenges.
