The Eagles will not face NFL punishment for the medical process that cleared Jalen Hurts to play in Week 5 with a superficial blood clot, according to Jonathan Jones of The Athletic.
Jones reported Tuesday that the league determinedthe process “was handled appropriately,” citing a league source who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Philadelphia also will not be punished for not designating Hurts as injured ahead of the game. Hurts has since been diagnosed with blood clots in both lungs and ruled out for the remainder of the season, leaving Philadelphia without its starting quarterback as it attempts to recover from a four-game losing streak.
The NFL’s decision raises two central questions
about Hurts’ availability against Jacksonville: whether the medical clearance process was handled properly and whether the Eagles should have designated him as injured. According to Jones, neither will result in discipline. The report did not provide additional details about the medical findings behind the league’s conclusion or a timetable for Hurts’ recovery.
For Philadelphia, the decision resolves the question of potential league punishment while the team prepares to move forward without Hurts. His absence leaves an offense already dealing with extensive injuries facing another significant challenge as it enters its NFC East stretch.
