Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni remains confident in Elijah Mitchell and Jaydon Blue despite the team's dwindling running back depth ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Washington Commanders.
With Saquon Barkley recovering from hamstring and back injuries and Dameon Pierce on injured reserve, Sirianni praised Mitchell's work during training camp and Blue's development, emphasizing that both have prepared for expanded responsibilities if needed.
Coach Sirianni spoke with the media on Friday. He expressed confidence in the group, but that confidence comes with an expectation that everyone does their job. Asked what needs to change despite the team's preparation, he pointed to a collective need for better attention to detail rather than
a lack of effort.
"I think the guys come in and they come into work hard, and the coaches come in, and they do their jobs. We’ve just got to pick up our detail. I can see how you perceive how I said that, that there’s something lacking. The guys are working hard. The guys are going out there and practicing hard. Our detail has to pick up as a whole."
Sirianni has consistently emphasized the importance of the weekly process, even when the results don't reflect the work being done. He reiterated that approach while acknowledging that preparation alone guarantees nothing.
"It’s not a perfect science... To give yourself the best chance to win each week, you have to have a great process. That guarantees you nothing, not one thing. It doesn't guarantee you anything, but it puts you in the best position to win each and every week. You can’t completely correlate that — My thing is, if we go and do everything the right way throughout the week and we end up losing the game, I can handle that."
For Philadelphia, the focus has to be on improving execution, which ultimately determines whether the preparation pays off. That standard will be particularly important in the running back room. Saquon Barkley is expected to play in Week 8, but he won't be 100 percent healthy.
Sirianni specifically praised Elijah Mitchell, who impressed him during training camp before getting injured, and Jaydon Blue, whom Sirianni said he has liked since watching him come out of the Texas Longhorns program. He added that he was excited about the players who would get an opportunity to contribute.
The Eagles can't control every injury, but they can control how prepared and disciplined the available players are when their opportunities arrive. Sirianni's message was consistent on both fronts. The work is happening, but Philadelphia needs sharper execution when it matters.
For Mitchell and Blue, that opportunity may extend beyond how many yards they produce. Pass protection, ball security, and executing their assignments will matter just as much, particularly if Barkley can't shoulder a full workload. The Eagles need dependable contributions from everyone in the room, not one player trying to carry the entire workload. That is where Sirianni's emphasis on detail becomes more than a talking point; it becomes a requirement for keeping the offense on schedule.
