ThePhiladelphia Eagles received an encouraging development Wednesday when Jonathan Greenard practiced for the first time since joining the organization.
Greenard missed all of training camp and the preseason because of a pectoral injury suffered while lifting weights shortly before camp. His return does not guarantee he will face the Washington Commanders in Sunday’s season opener, but it gives Philadelphia an opportunity to evaluate his conditioning and how the injury responds to increased activity.
According to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles want to monitor Greenard throughout the week before determining whether he is ready to play. Head coach Nick Sirianni did not have an update on Greenard’s status earlier Wednesday.
His participation provided the most encouraging indication yet that his Eagles debut could be approaching.
Philadelphia acquired Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings during the NFL draft before signing him to a four-year extension. The Eagles expect the former Pro Bowl selection to provide an established pass-rushing presence opposite Jalyx Hunt. Greenard recorded 12 sacks for Minnesota in 2024 after producing a career-high 12½ with Houston the previous season. Injuries limited him to three sacks in 12 games last year.
If Greenard cannot play Sunday, the Eagles can continue leaning on Hunt, Nolan Smith Jr., Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa along the edge. Even if he is active, his workload could be restricted after missing the entire summer.
The Eagles will learn more as the week progresses. For now, getting Greenard back on the practice field represents an important first step.
