The Philadelphia Eagles possess one of the NFL’s most complete rosters, but even championship contenders enter every season with players who must step up and provide more.
The Birds are stacked with young players and key veterans preparing to inherit larger roles. Others are veterans attempting to reestablish themselves after uneven performances. As the season opener against Washington looms,t here are a handful of players on the roster who need to take another jump.
Here are five Eagles who must improve during the 2026 season.
1. Nolan Smith Jr.
Smith enters a pivotal stage of his development after having his fifth-year option exercised. His speed and effort have never been questioned, but Philadelphia needs him to become a more consistent pass-rushing threat who
can win without being schemed into favorable situations. Jonathan Greenard, A.J. Epenesa, Arnold Ebiketie and Jalyx Hunt give Vic Fangio options on the edge. Smith must separate himself by finishing pressures and holding up against the run.
2. Tyler Steen
Steen’s physical ability has always made him an intriguing option along the interior offensive line. Now, the Eagles need dependable week-to-week production from a player who has Pro Bowl potential. He must play with better balance in pass protection, recognize pressure more quickly, and eliminate the lapses that can derail otherwise productive possessions. A strong season in a contract year would stabilize the offensive line and reduce the need to accelerate the development of Philadelphia’s younger blockers.
3. Andrew Mukuba
Mukuba enters his second season as the only true safety with a clear starting role. Philadelphia selected him in the second round of the 2025 draft, and he quickly demonstrated the instincts, range, and ball skills needed to operate on the back end of Fangio’s defense. The former Texas standout started 10 games and played 60% of Philadelphia’s regular-season defensive snaps before suffering a fractured ankle that ended his season. He recorded 46 tackles, two interceptions, three passes defensed and a half-sack in 11 appearances. One of his interceptions came against Patrick Mahomes during Philadelphia’s Week 2 victory over Kansas City.
4. Will Shipley
Shipley’s value extends beyond his rushing totals. He has the speed to produce explosive plays and the receiving ability to create mismatches. Still, Philadelphia needs him to become more reliable in pass protection and in the details of running back play. Saquon Barkley cannot handle every meaningful touch. Shipley must prove Sean Mannion can trust him in every situation.
5. Jake Elliott
Elliott has converted some of the most important kicks in franchise history, but specialists are judged heavily on recent consistency. Philadelphia expects to play several close games against other NFC contenders, leaving little margin for missed opportunities. Elliott must provide stability from manageable distances while remaining a threat on longer attempts.
