Howie Roseman has confidence in the Philadelphia Eagles’ initial roster. Experience has also taught the longtime general manager not to declare victory before the season begins. Jason Dumas of 6ABC asked Roseman for his broader evaluation of the team entering Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.
“I think this is a humbling game, and every time you feel good about something, something comes up that makes you feel not so good,” Roseman said.
Philadelphia’s roster reflects clear organizational priorities. The Eagles retained four quarterbacks, 10 offensive linemen and 10 defensive linemen or edge defenders. Those numbers reinforce Roseman’s belief in protecting the quarterback, developing offensive linemen and applying pressure with the defensive front.
“What I feel good about is that we have conviction about certain areas of our football team that we want to keep strong,” Roseman said. “It shows up in our roster. That will show up over time during the season.”
The Eagles constructed their roster with depth in mind, but no team can predict exactly where injuries will occur. Roseman expects the initial 53-man roster and practice squad to evolve as those circumstances change.
“Adversity will strike us,” Roseman said. “Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game. Who that is, when that happens, all those stories are not yet written.”
Roseman’s comments provided a realistic assessment rather than a sweeping preseason declaration. Philadelphia likes its talent, but the roster has young depth at several positions and a new offensive system that has not been tested during a regular-season game.
“I’m just going to take it one day at a time,” Roseman said, “continue to evaluate opportunities to continue to get better.”
The evaluation will continue throughout the season.
